Abraham Foxman’s Concerns By Anthony David Marks (IHC News Editorial, 21 December 2005) Abraham Foxman is the National Director of the well established ADL, Anti-Defamation League in the United States, and as such commands much media attention. He speaks as a Jew but equally as an American, which is understandable. However, when issues touch upon Israel there are considerations that are not his first priorities. The issue of American evangelical support for the State of Israel is a case in point. Actually, two aspects stem from the growing influence of the loosely knit American Evangelical Christian community numbering in the tens of millions. Firstly is their influence on American politics and secondly their influence on the State of Israel through very strong support and programs. Mr. Foxman, a secular person, wants a strict separation of church and state in the United States. The problem is that every society needs definable values that determine such things as morality and ethics. These types of considerations cannot be legislated. However, without them any society would falter and gradually deteriorate. Many feel this is what is happening in the United States. It is becoming one big jungle where many cannot distinguish right from wrong. The American Evangelicals have shown strong support for Israel. They have gone to pains to repeat there are no strings attached to their support and generosity. Most Jews accept this including many in the Orthodox Jewish community. Mr. Foxman seems to be saying that Jews should be wary of them. He cites an interesting point which the writer is unable to confirm at this time and that is: The Christian world has dropped the word “Judeo” from the phrase Judeo-Christian values.
